If it's your first time in Amsterdam then you'll probably want to book either somewhere near the city center where most of the entertainment and nightlife is (including the infamous red light district) or nearer the museum quarter if you're that way inclined.
The further out you are, the more likely your chances of finding a cheap hotel in Amsterdam but you are also more likely to have to travel further to your destinations.
