Low Budget Adventures in the US

With the cost of everything from gas to groceries sky-rocketing, most families are beginning to wonder just how much they should be spending on a summer vacation. If you thought your family was the only one suffering, trust me, you're not alone. We're all looking for some way to have a memorable, fun vacation away from home, without regretting it when we get back to reality and the credit card bill arrives.

The first thing you should be thankful for is that you live in a country with so many wonderful sites and destinations. We are blessed to have diverse climates, wonderful natural parks, world famous cities and wide open spaces all within driving distance of any starting point in the continental United States. So the first expense you should cut out of your vacation travel budget is the airfare. Why get caught up in the airfare wars and never-ending fees that are being tacked on when you can just hop in the car and enjoy some drive time with your family?

Your next step should be to attempt to reach a consensus on a destination. Of course the kids will often have a different agenda than the adults, but in the end, kids will generally enjoy and remember the time together as much as the actual destination. Be careful to select a place that is reasonably close so all of your time isn't eaten up on the road. The best part of vacation is the relaxation and stress reduction, so you don't want to spoil that by trapping everyone in the car while nerves wear thin and people get restless.

To identify a destination I like to use websites where others offer a first-hand opinion on the pros and cons of a particular place. For example, if you're really into open space and you like wine, you might search for Missouri Vineyard Directory. This will provide a listing of Missouri vineyards and wineries that offer tours and tastings.
