Koh Lipe (pronounced: Lee-Pay), one of the smallest yet most beautiful islands in Thailand. The island is part of the Tarutao National Marine park and is situated in the Southern province of Satun. Lipe Island is described as a flat and oval land. In the surrounding areas, there are both shallow and deep coral reefs. The seawater is emerald-blue and crystal clear and there are numerous types of exotic marine wildlife. Because of the beauty of the sea, it is often called the " Maldives of Thailand ". The island is also home to a resident population of Chao Ley, or Sea Gypsies which live in small villages, predominantly around the far east side of the island.
The sands of Koh Lipe are as soft as powder and stretch across the length of the island. If you are looking for peace and tranquillity amongst beautiful surroundings, then this is definitely the place to visit. The island is serene and relatively untouched by the hands of time. There are some bungalows and developments along the beach, and several small restaurants and bars dotted across the isle. The establishments are built in the traditional style of the sea gypsies that inhabit the island. The bars feature hammocks built in amongst the trees, and tables underneath the star lit skies. There is no better way to enjoy an evening than relaxing with an ice cold drink watching the dazzling shooting stars with the sand beneath your feet.
During the day, basking in the sun or swimming in the clear seas are great options. Boat and snorkelling trips are also available to some of the nearby islands. Koh Lipe is part of a natural marine park and boasts a wonderful range of marine life and species. The scuba diving is pristine and offers a great place to learn as well as enjoy visiting the surrounding dive sites.
