Take a family vacation this summer. It does not have to be expensive because there are many things you can do to find cheap vacations.

Choose a destination closer to home. Avoid the hassle of airports and drive. Even with the price of gas at $143 a barrel, if your destination is not that far away, it will most likely be considerably cheaper than purchasing several plane tickets.
Instead of staying in a hotel, stay in a cabin. They tend to be considerably cheaper than hotel rooms and come with fully equipped kitchens that allow you to prepare your own meals, which save you additional money on your vacation. When you stay in a cabin, there tend to be many activities that you can enjoy during your stay. They may include hiking, boating, fishing, swimming and/or horseback riding.

Another one of the cheap vacations, probably the cheapest, is to go camping. You save additional money on accommodations, and are still able to prepare the meals yourself instead of eating at restaurants. Camping allows you to spend time with your family and enjoy many of the same activities available to those who stay in cabins.

If you choose to fly to your destination, compare air fares on the Internet to find cheap tickets. Be thorough and look at websites that compare several different airlines. When you compare air fares, don't forget to include the taxes and fees. Some airlines charge many fees and will actually be much more expensive in the end than airlines with slightly higher ticket prices before fees. (Also, most airlines are now charging for checked bags. American Airlines charges $15 for the first checked bag and $25 for the second. Continental, Delta, Frontier, Northwest, United and US Airways charge nothing for the first checked bag and $25 for the second. Southwest does not charge any fees for checked bags.) If you will be staying in a hotel or need an auto rental, do additional searches that include everything you need to find the cheapest overall price for your vacation.
