Skiing Holidays - Tips for Late Season Trips

Austria had heavy snow in November and a month later the Alps saw the best skiing conditions in a generation. On top of this, Aspen noted a record-breaking month of snow in December and Canada's Whistler continued with its high rate of snow fall, which topped seven meters. It seems that this winter has been the best for skiing, so if you don't want to miss out on the fun then here's how you can join in before the season finishes.

Give up on Half-Term

Try not to book your skiing holidays near the half-term or you will find that the pistes will be extremely busy, as our half-term collides with some similar school breaks across Europe. There are not many late deals around at the moment, however, if you were to go in March or early April you will find that it will be cheaper and less crowded. You will notice that prices get more expensive towards mid-March because of the Easter holidays, however, these prices are never as expensive as the half-term prices, so you will be able to get cheap holidays if you were to go at this time instead.

When Skiing - Aim High

In the past, the Alps have been an example as to how the weather can change, as there were sudden blasts of hot air that made daytime temperatures on the slopes rise to 12C. This means that you're in for slush in the afternoons and ice in the mornings and of course, neither of these conditions are very good for skiing. The best way to avoid conditions like these is to target Alpine resorts, as most of their skiing is above 2,000 metres.

Or Alternatively - Go to North America

As well as skiing high in Alpine resorts you could also try skiing in the Rockies, which are even more wintry than the Alps. Vale has seen 21 ft of snow recently, Snowbird in Utah has had 29 ft and Jackson Hole in Wyoming has had a massive 30 ft of snow. Another advantage of these places in North America is that they are also set at extremely high altitudes; Vale has skiing between 8,200 ft and 11,250 ft.

Lake Louise, in the Canadian Rockies, is another resort that is good for late-season skiing. It has a drier climate than the places further south but it is even colder which means that there is less powder and therefore great conditions for skiing.

Make a Last Minute Booking

Once you have checked the conditions and found the place that you want to go skiing, it is then best to book your holidays as close to the start of your break as is possible, as this is when you should be able to find some great deals. You can check conditions at ski resorts at www.snow-forecast.com.

Try not to book your skiing holidays too close to the half-term as it is very busy and expensive at this time.

You will find it easier to get cheap holidays during March and early April.

It is best to book your holidays as close to your break as possible, as last minute deals are the best bargain.
