Auckland A picturesque modern city in New Zealand

Auckland has been blessed with one of the most picturesque settings of any modern city in the world. Nowhere else in New Zealand are you closer to the east and west coasts, a feature which gives Aucklanders ample access to the water.

Yachts, power boats, kayaks, windsurfers and jet skis all dart around the islands in the Waitemata Harbour whilst fishermen drop their lines and divers check out the situation below the waves.

Past the harbour entrance lie numerous island paradises. Endless golden sand beaches, pristine native forests and rare and endangered native birdlife all form a part of the wilderness beauty right on Auckland's doorstep.

The islands also hold many clues to Auckland's and New Zealand's early history and more recently, Waiheke Island has become associated with some of New Zealand's best wines.

Although in quite close proximity to one another, each island is unique and able to offer something quite different to the visitor, whether staying for a few days or even just few hours.

For example you can spend an afternoon touring the award winning wineries on Waiheke, relax on one of the many white sandy beaches of Great Barrier, explore old mineral mines on Kawau Island or join a specialist nature tour to view rare and endangered birdlife on Tiritiri Matangi.
