Most has already been said about The Datai in the previous reviews. There's not much to add, but we still feel that this hotel deserves a bit of our time to leave a great review.
Firstly, the service in the resort amazes everyone and it is truly an experience. The attention given to everyone staying at the resort is unbelievable.
My girlfriend got sick on her way to the resort, and it took them less than 5 minutes to get a doctor to see her, letting us proceed with the check in at a more convenient time.
We stayed for 7 nights at the Datai, first 3 nights staying in a Pool Villa and the rest in a Superior Villa. As previously mentioned by others in TA, Pool Villa is a nice touch and we did get to enjoy it, more so in the evening than daytime, since the trees blocked out the sun pretty much most of the time. But in the evenings, it is a nice bonus, to sit back in the lit pool, with the jetties blowing water to your back, while drinking wine and smoking a cigar. To add to this is of course is the open rain-forest/jungle which surrounds the Villa. Although some reviews complained about the constant noise of the birds, to us it all added up to a great Jungle experience. After all it is much nicer than the traffic noise of London.
Superior Villa has the same bedroom area, but a much larger bathroom area, which was taken up by an open Pool in the previous Villa. His and Hers toiletries, sinks and separate wardrobes really makes a nice touch. And in the far middle, you have a nice bath tub. Because it overlooked our neighbour's Villa, we only used the one in the Pool Villa since it had a nice view of our Pool.
We chose to not pre-book any of our meals, and did a la carte all the way, which is a nice break, as you can eat what you want and when you want. The amazing surprise was that room service prices were the same as the ones in the restaurants, orders are open 24 hours a day and the service provided was great!
I was first a bit weary of the costs in the resort, especially reading about reviews of people spending £250 a day! We however managed to spend a total of only £500 a week, while eating, drinking and buying whatever tickled our fancy! I really don't think that this is expensive for a 5* Resort, especially when staying on a Room Only basis. So really, don't be put off by reviews of people telling you how expensive it is. You'll find that prices are more or less equal to prices in pubs in London, but obviously with a much better, more attentive service, quality of food and gorgeous surrounding.
We were also initially afraid of the weather patterns this time of year, but had both rainy and sunny days which was perfect. It was good to have a rainy day after you get sunburned (an inevitable experience with us). And by the way, you rarely get a full day of rain this time of year, so even if it does rain, you might still be enjoying the sun an hour later. Just perfect.
One thing which you must do is the Cable car experience which really opened our eyes on the whole beauty of the island. Waterfalls were also very beautiful, but be aware that you will need to climb quite high up and if it's hot, it might get very tiring! So take some water. Also, beware of the monkeys, at least outside of the hotel, as they might take you food if you hold it in your hands or in a bag.
A lot of the things in the hotel are complimentary which again is a really nice touch. They notify you straight away about what you can use, and what service is complimentary. Transfers to Andaman, Datai's sister resort, and all buggy rides to the beach or your Villa are complimentary. Hotel has a nice CD and DVD library in case you cant sleep at night. And quite a few other things which have already been mentioned by others.
We tried all the restaurants in Datai and must say that the Thai restaurant was the best. However, we found that overall, the food at Andaman hotel was better for some reason, so would definitely recommend trying it as well as Datai's restaurants.
The hotel would almost regularly slide notifications under our door about the upcoming events at the resort and general notifications of flight confirmations etc. A really great way to keep your own mind focused on the holiday and not having to worry about these things.
All in all, a marvelous place to stay, with great staff and service, amazing views of the jungle, beach and Thailand just across the Andaman Sea! If you can handle all the relaxation, pampering and the views, go for Datai, as it is the best resort offering the most of Langkawi's natural beauty!
If anyone considering going there would like some pointers on this resort, I'll be happy to answer.
