Royal Palm Hotel

We spent two ten day stays in Mauritius, and this was our second hotel. We had previously read the reviews on trip advisor so our expectations were high as this trip was to celebrate our Saphire(45 years) wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed, The service at the hotel is really first class, from the boys on the beach to the restaurant staff, they really give first class service. The hotel is expensive for meals and drinks, but this is to be expected for such a standard of hotel. We could not fault the hotel in any way, and the number of returning guests at the hotel is testament to it's popularity. It is expensive, but we will return the next time we have a special date to celebrate. The hotel is vey close to Grand Baie, and you can walk in ten minutes if you want cheaper dining or drinks. The island of Mauritius, and the people are lovely and so friendly, and you do not feel unsafe if you walk after dark. I would recommend the hotel and Island to anyone.

Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas

I arrived on my first holiday in 5 years to relax and put my feet up. Inside 5 minutes on arrival I was whisked to my rooom and 10 minutes later relaxing on the terrace.

My only glitch (major one for me) as the people in the room next door deciding to put on the room cd player with Rod Stewart at full volume. I called reception and the duty manager, tried very hard to sort me out with an alternative room which he did so with grace and diligence.

My end room was great with a sea view and really killed off any reason for me to leave my room almost the whole of the week particularly with a view to die for etc!

I've read the other reviews re food prices etc but to be honest there is a choice. I had a room service Mousakka delivered to my beautiful sundeck for about 18 euros. OK it may not have been the 9 euro's you would pay in the village but there is a slight difference in ambiance! Also, I had a pizza another night for 14 euro's so please don't complain that there is not a choice of food options. I also used the main restaurants and had the most fantastic italian meal .Ok it did cost 80 euro's but again look at the environment which is beautiful and the staff really did care rather than go through the motions. Afterwards, I walked to Veghara bar which is a touch of the Maldives brough to Crete. Beautiful bar, comfy sofa's and again great service.

I could not speak highly enough of the management team at Elounda Beach. I am a difficult guest to please and I stay a lot at 5 stars hotels so know how standards can vary. This is a 5 start hotel BUT it this is a beach hotel and not the Mandardin Oriental and a different ambiance applies to both.

Did I enjoy it? Very definitely. Relaxing, great food to suit all tastes and pockets and a management team that really cares for the customer.

Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay

There is only one word to describe this hotel: BREATHTAKING!!

The highlight of my trip to BALI was definitely the hotel, which infuses the essence of the Balinese culture. Absolutely STUNNING. The hotel has won some of the world’s finest hospitality awards and is consistently ranked in the top 5 resorts in all Travel industry awards, this shows.

I arrived at Depansar Airport in Bali from Hong Kong, after a wonderful plane ride from LHR. I had booked a car pickup from the Four Seasons Hotel (highly recommended) Immediately upon leaving the Airport, I was warmly greeted by a Four Seasons Hotel representative dressed in white traditional Balinese wear. He was holding a Four Seasons sign. Unlike other pickups, the hotel did not display my name for discreetness.

He immediately picked my luggage and we proceeded to the waiting air-conditioned Four Seasons Toyota 4x4.

When we reached the vehicle the driver came out and gave me a warm greeting, took my bags for the other person and loaded the 4x4. When I got inside the vehicle, I was presented with a cold towel and chilled bottle water. Immediately we proceeded to the hotel (absolutely stressed free). The driver called the hotel to inform them that I was on my way.

Prior to entering the Four Seasons property, as a security precaution heightened by 9/11 and the KUTA bombing, the vehicle was screened by 3 security guards. The entrance to the hotel was magnificent and grand. I was greeted by two gracious hostesses and shown to the sofa where I was offered a fruit punch and cold hand towel. Everyone wore traditional white Balinese clothing. Registration was done by a check-in agent as I sat on the sofa, enjoying my drink The assistant manager came out and welcomed me and he was happy to inform me that he was able to secure villa 281 that I had requested.

Once done, I was given the map to this wonderful resort and was whisked away in a buggy to my villa.

The drive through the villa was amazing. Once I arrived at my villa 281 another person was waiting inside to guide me through my villa.

The VILLA:
This wonderful resort does not have rooms, but ratter villa’s resembling a Balinese hut/village compound (totaling 2,200 Square feet of pure luxury). The 147 villas is located on a hill and overlooks Jimbaran Bay. All the villas have gorgeous panoramic view of the bay and are modeled after a Balinese village.

The living and dining rooms are open air. On the dining room table was a tray of exotic fruits.

There is a huge plunge pool, which is about 5 feet deep. I love the pool and used it frequently to cool down from the hot sun – first thing in the morning and afternoons.

The bedroom is in a closed building and is well air-conditioned. Inside this building is where one finds all the luxurious Four Seasons amenities like the fabulous FS bed, the large standalone bath tub for two, floor to wall marbled washroom, and luxurious toiletries. Complimentary bottled water was provided. It was not recommended that guest drink or brush teeth using the tap water.

The bathroom has two showers (one indoor and the other outdoor.

SERVICE:
What can I say…Simply the Four Seasons way: FABULOUS. I was always addressed by name. With a staff ratio of 5 staff to1, you know service will be outstanding!!

I ordered room service and couldn’t decide if I wanted fries or salad with my lunch. They brought me both! One time, I ordered breakfast from room service. The food was delivered. I forgot to asked him to bring straws… Guess what happened? The poor guy ran all the way back to the kitchen and within 2 minutes brought me straws as he panted to catch his breadth.

There were countless other examples like this….

FACILITIES:
Again, what can I say, OUTSTANDING, Simply Four Seasons.

The gym, connected to the SPA was superb! One afternoon, I decided to pay a visit the the gym and have a workout (well I visited every day but I don't want to show off), after feeling guilty from eating way too much Indonesian food!! In the middle of my run, the gym attendant saw that I was sweating like a waterfall, came over and offered me a nice cold face towel and chilled bottled water. When I had finished running, he came over to help me stretch! Boy did that feel good. The dressing room was also amazing. Each guests using the facility received a personal locker. Each locker had a sarong, cotton bathrobes, slippers, large towel, and plastic bag for dirty clothing. There was a sauna, steam room with aroma-therapy (which I used extensively), two whirlpools (one warm one cold), and two shower rooms (which had the typical shower head and an additional rain shower head). The facility has everything one would need in terms of toiletries: Molton brown Hair Gel, Aftershave, lotions, Foot spray, Talcum powder, mouth rinse, shaving razors, combs, etc…).

In addition to the gym, the resort offers cooking classes, complimentary morning workouts, bike rides, tennis, and water sports of all kind.

The four days went ever so quickly and I regrettably had to leave this little piece of heaven. I booked through the hotel again the transportation back to the airport. The 4x4 and driver were waiting for me at 1400h and the Four Seasons representative at the airport took my bags all the way through the immigration clearance.

Jimbaran beach is excellent for swimming, as it is very calm (rare for Bali), and also has some very good fish restaurants on the beach. I don't think that it is particularly noteworthy otherwise.

One one poor note, I was particularly disappointed with FS beach facilities, which consist of closely arranged chaise lounges and a few scattered umbrellas. There is basically no privacy and if you don't get an umbrella before they run out, you will boil.

The hotel is a very good place if you prefer a plunge pool to the beach, and are likely to spend most of your stay in your villa. The villas are in fact excellent, beautifully landscaped and most comfortable. I think that if a spectacular beach is a must though, FS is not the place for you.

Although it is a fairly large property, if you are in your villa you never see or hear anyone else and all the lush landscaping makes you feel very private.

Built into the hillside with little winding trails, rice paddies, flower gardens, and sunken villas - a rushing little river complete with small waterfalls and minor rapids, and the only "groups" we saw were people occasionally at lunch because it seems that when in Bali, everyone tours around looking at the Aman resorts and different Four Seasons in their hotel cars, having lunch or dinner at the different places. We went to Amankila one day and I agree that is it indeed spectacular and reminded us of the Caribbean!

This is a truly an outstanding RESORT.. I will certainly return.

My goal of pure relaxation was TRULY fulfilled!!

The Datai Langkawi

Most has already been said about The Datai in the previous reviews. There's not much to add, but we still feel that this hotel deserves a bit of our time to leave a great review.

Firstly, the service in the resort amazes everyone and it is truly an experience. The attention given to everyone staying at the resort is unbelievable.

My girlfriend got sick on her way to the resort, and it took them less than 5 minutes to get a doctor to see her, letting us proceed with the check in at a more convenient time.

We stayed for 7 nights at the Datai, first 3 nights staying in a Pool Villa and the rest in a Superior Villa. As previously mentioned by others in TA, Pool Villa is a nice touch and we did get to enjoy it, more so in the evening than daytime, since the trees blocked out the sun pretty much most of the time. But in the evenings, it is a nice bonus, to sit back in the lit pool, with the jetties blowing water to your back, while drinking wine and smoking a cigar. To add to this is of course is the open rain-forest/jungle which surrounds the Villa. Although some reviews complained about the constant noise of the birds, to us it all added up to a great Jungle experience. After all it is much nicer than the traffic noise of London.

Superior Villa has the same bedroom area, but a much larger bathroom area, which was taken up by an open Pool in the previous Villa. His and Hers toiletries, sinks and separate wardrobes really makes a nice touch. And in the far middle, you have a nice bath tub. Because it overlooked our neighbour's Villa, we only used the one in the Pool Villa since it had a nice view of our Pool.

We chose to not pre-book any of our meals, and did a la carte all the way, which is a nice break, as you can eat what you want and when you want. The amazing surprise was that room service prices were the same as the ones in the restaurants, orders are open 24 hours a day and the service provided was great!

I was first a bit weary of the costs in the resort, especially reading about reviews of people spending £250 a day! We however managed to spend a total of only £500 a week, while eating, drinking and buying whatever tickled our fancy! I really don't think that this is expensive for a 5* Resort, especially when staying on a Room Only basis. So really, don't be put off by reviews of people telling you how expensive it is. You'll find that prices are more or less equal to prices in pubs in London, but obviously with a much better, more attentive service, quality of food and gorgeous surrounding.

We were also initially afraid of the weather patterns this time of year, but had both rainy and sunny days which was perfect. It was good to have a rainy day after you get sunburned (an inevitable experience with us). And by the way, you rarely get a full day of rain this time of year, so even if it does rain, you might still be enjoying the sun an hour later. Just perfect.

One thing which you must do is the Cable car experience which really opened our eyes on the whole beauty of the island. Waterfalls were also very beautiful, but be aware that you will need to climb quite high up and if it's hot, it might get very tiring! So take some water. Also, beware of the monkeys, at least outside of the hotel, as they might take you food if you hold it in your hands or in a bag.

A lot of the things in the hotel are complimentary which again is a really nice touch. They notify you straight away about what you can use, and what service is complimentary. Transfers to Andaman, Datai's sister resort, and all buggy rides to the beach or your Villa are complimentary. Hotel has a nice CD and DVD library in case you cant sleep at night. And quite a few other things which have already been mentioned by others.

We tried all the restaurants in Datai and must say that the Thai restaurant was the best. However, we found that overall, the food at Andaman hotel was better for some reason, so would definitely recommend trying it as well as Datai's restaurants.

The hotel would almost regularly slide notifications under our door about the upcoming events at the resort and general notifications of flight confirmations etc. A really great way to keep your own mind focused on the holiday and not having to worry about these things.

All in all, a marvelous place to stay, with great staff and service, amazing views of the jungle, beach and Thailand just across the Andaman Sea! If you can handle all the relaxation, pampering and the views, go for Datai, as it is the best resort offering the most of Langkawi's natural beauty!

If anyone considering going there would like some pointers on this resort, I'll be happy to answer.

Cap Juluca

This was probably the most relaxing, most romantic holiday my husband and I have had since our honeymoon in Hawaii 3 years ago. Our first trip w/o kids since our second came along 11 months ago. The most beautiful beaches. Lots of sun but a nice tradewind keeps you cool while sunning.

Cap Juluca had it all.

We checked out the other hotels in this price category and went to look at the rooms at each Malliohana, Cuisinart and Covecastles. Malliohana is really old and rooms in the $800 range are not right on the beach, rooms are sparse and the furniture is old. It really needs to have a complete renovation.

Cuisinart is very nice and new and has televisions and vcr's in their rooms but it's not as nicely spread out along the beach as Cap Juluca. It has beautiful bathrooms too. It also has the nicest pool of the bunch! Nice pool furniture; big cushy lounge chairs! My favorite restaurant for food on the island is Cuisinart. If Cap Juluca was all booked I would call here next!

Cap Juluca is soo nice. I thought the bedding was a bit rough (Polyester bedspread very uncomfortable! Low threadcount sheets.). Bathrooms are amazing! Jr suites are Very spacious! The furniture is very nice. No tv is actually a godsend. (unless you brought the kids). We rented a cd player and bought a couple of the local bands' cd's. It was really nice listening every night as we sat on our patio and looked west and watched the sunset every evening. Nicest beach of the bunch!

Covecastles in very nice and very private and very exclusive. Very very very quiet beach!! The most beautiful condos with kitchens. Great Furniture!! Nice bedding! (Bathrooms not as nice as Cap Juluca though!)

However I think I would go back to Cap Juluca cuz it has the best beach. Great watersports! And although I enjoyed quiet and privacy there was just enough people around to enjoy some nice conversations about which restaurant to try and what's a good read for the beach! Plus Cap Juluca has more suites with plunge pools and they also have a large pool for the resort. So if I brought the kids sometime I'd need that.

I don't think I'm planning to bring my kids anytime soon though. It is a perfect getaway for two! Very romantic. Very quiet.

(Also it would be expensive to bring the kids and if you're a foodie the kids might not appreciate it as much).

I have to say none of these hotels are as good as "The Four Season's". But there's only one 4 seasons in the Caribbean and that's on Nevis and I don't think Nevis has the great restaurants that Anguilla has.

This was by all accounts the Best holiday we've every had for food in the caribbean.

It is almost as good as Maui!!

Little Dix Bay Resort

Posted by kwschram
We had a wonderful stay for a week at Little Dix Bay Resort.

The beach and bay were fantastic! There was crystal clear water that was smooth as glass due to the leeward location of the resort and barrier reef across mouth of bay. If you are into restful bathing with no waves to disturb your water slumber, this is the place.

The grounds and flora were spectacular and meticulously kept by an ever-busy grounds crew. Service at all points (front desk, housekeeping, room service, beach and pier) was excellent.

The jewel of the resort was the spa, which was world-class from start to finish. The setting was stunning. Situated on the ridge at the mouth of the bay, the vista across the plunge pool and Caribbean at the entrance was breathtaking.

By design, I am sure, guests were asked to relax by the pool until the therapist arrived to gather them up and move higher up the ridge to one of the treatment cottages set amongst the lavish landscaping, and overlooking the Caribbean. In this setting it would be hard to find any fault with the massages, facials or other treatments available, but they stood on their own as truly excellent. The spa experience was probably reason enough to visit Little Dix.

Torch lit private dinners on the beach were also available and worth the expense for this unique experience.

All the above being said, Little Dix fell short of expectations in some regards. It was very hard to get there from secondary air markets, and the poor connections to Tortola coupled with boat ride to Virgin Gorda made for a very long day of travel that took the breath out of the stay before it began.

We found the food to be mostly average to good, but in very few cases it was excellent. The manager's beach buffet at the Pavillion was particularly poor in both selection and quality. The menus were limited and did not change during our stay.

The premium beachfront room we stayed in, although comfortable and clean, was neither spacious nor well appointed. A Holiday Inn Express would be described as more luxurious. The grounds were beautiful, but came with a cost of suffering the constant early morning starts of ground crews using gasoline edgers, mowers, tractors, trimmers, etc.

All in all, the beach and bay, beauty of the grounds, the service and especially the spa made Little Dix worth a visit. However, average food and average rooms at much more than twice average costs for luxury Caribbean resorts will probably keep us from returning.

Professional Review for Copacabana Palace Hotel

This property is the most famous hotel in Rio de Janeiro, and for traditionalists, it is the best. Those expecting world-class service and impeccable standards of maintenance and cuisine, however, are still required to lower their sights to get comfortable here.

This opulent beach palace designed by the architect of the Negresco in Nice dates from 1923. One cannot miss this hotel, as it is the only one with a grand, carved white-marble facade, making it the matriarch of Copacabana. Its conscientious renovations continue their slow but steady pace, but they often arrive late. As a result, portions of the hotel are in fine condition, while other areas suffer neglect. Granted, rates here are far below what one pays at a comparable property in other parts of the world, but there is no excuse for having to nag the staff to get results.

Guests check in at a small reception area and proceed directly to high-ceilinged salons that are elegant in the manner expected of Orient-Express. Frosted glass shimmers, pale colors calm, wainscoting and inlaid woods glow, and huge bouquets dazzle.

In Cipriani, the intimate formal restaurant in the annex on the far side of the courtyard, the Venetian chef turns out excellent Italian fare. Across, a handsome bar is adorned with a grand chandelier. Off the lobby, a hallway, with rather tired paint and rugs, leads to the second restaurant, an informal garden-style room and terrace. Its linen-topped tables and chairs cut a path between the mosaic sidewalks and the huge fountained pool. A wall of French windows provides views of the busy street and, more importantly, protection from the riffraff strolling past on Avenida Atlantica. Tables close to the pool are preferable, and breakfast buffets are offered here. The tearoom is a chandeliered space with soaring windows, draped tables and marble inlay.

Suite

The pool, trimmed with a narrow deck, is the biggest hotel plunge in Rio. It is in a conspicuous location offering little privacy to guests who may be experimenting with string bikinis for the first time. The rooftop tennis court is the only aerial court in Rio, and a sauna and health club await as well.

The glamorous meeting rooms can host up to 1,100 people, and the Golden Room is a historic dazzler for up to 450. Parking levies fees. Well-behaved pets are permitted.

Guest quarters are in the main building and newer all-suite annex. Most display a classic 1950s cast in cocoa-brown carpeting, cabriole-leg armchairs, desks, pedestal tables and padded headboards. Some carpeting is long overdue for replacement, but some is fresh and new. On a brighter note, data ports, TVs, VCRs, minibars and safes are in place throughout, and the large baths have hair dryers (but no magnifying mirrors).

Pool

Standard rooms lack water views, superiors face the pool, and deluxe rooms scan the ocean. Premium rooms on floor 5 fetch the highest rates. Guests in these rooms benefit from four fabulous mini-offices with free Internet access, as well as Continental breakfast, cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. On all floors, rooms in the -04 series are largest. Suites, also priced according to exposure, are fully carpeted, with upholstered armchairs, 1930s mahogany writing tables, dressers and ample combination baths. Some units are fitted for guests with disabilities, and room service runs round the clock.

Although the new kid on the block, J.W. Marriott, is giving this hotel some stiff competition, this place remains the most distinguished address in Rio—those infatuated with the Rio of the 1930s, 40s and 50s should stay nowhere else—but the staff fails to meet expectations.
